The 126-years old Penang ferry service was terminated on December 31, 2020. A ferry ride across the Penang Channel was an iconic experience in the collective memories of many people. Majority of the daily ferry commuters were wage earners who travelled to the island for work. There were also many tourists and visitors. The most memorable experience would definitely be embracing the sea breeze and view.

The materials presented here are produced during one of Lefty’s ferry experiences from the mainland to the island.  The artist was especially captivated by the peaceful temporalities at the upper front deck when people of different walks of life either stood or sat together, gazing into the distance at the approaching Pearl of the Orient Island. From time to time, there were exchanges of casual conversations around common topics such as food, landmarks, current affairs on the island. These conversations projected a deep sense of belonging from different people. At these moments, the island as a shared destination, was also symbolically a shared home for everyone regardless of individual backgrounds.
